KING CHARLES III VISITS CURATED MAKERS CHRISTMAS MARKET

In December I had the unbelievable honour of not only meeting His Majesty King Charles but also escorting him around our Christmas markets at Battersea Power Station.

Curated Makers itself actually began seven years ago on a market stall. I felt immensely proud to show off our own Christmas Market in such an iconic location in the presence of the King. An event that certainly wasn’t what stallholders had in mind when they in-trusted their final weeks of trading before Christmas with Curated Makers. I hope they enjoyed this wonderful surprise as much as I did. So many of them talked with the King about their businesses and passions, it was inspiring.

Back in 2018 and at the same time as launching my new retail concept that would go on to become Curated Makers, I started an enterprise course with The Princes Trust, now The King’s Trust. Six years on and the Trust has been a crucial part of my business development. Through the Trust I was introduced to an invaluable mentor who has become a lifelong friend. More recently I am so proud to have been a King’s Trust young person ambassador.  I will continue to champion them and the work they do long after that comes to an end. I simply cannot put into words what the trust has done for me and giving back allows me to express my gratitude.

This was the King's first visit to Battersea Power Station since its opening over two years ago; following a huge restoration and reimaging of the iconic building and surrounding area. During the visit The King spoke to stall holders, young entrepreneurs, local community organisations and primary schools. His Majesty also met Rita Kelly, who worked in the Power Station in the 1950s, and officially opened the restored Power Station to the public in 2022. The King met local traders and entrepreneurs supported by The King’s Trust all whilst walking and talking with me about what being a part of the King’s Trust has done for my business.

I am so thankful to the Kings Trust and the team at Battersea Power Station for entrusting me with such a pivotal role on the day of the Kings visit. I was nervous and excited before the event but after the initial meeting with His Majesty King Charles his demeanour allowed me to relax and enjoy the 30 minutes we spent engaging with the makers. His Majesty took his time when talking to the makers about their businesses and stall offerings. He showed genuine interest especially where makers were using what would otherwise be waste to create their imaginative products.

The ripple effect of Curated Makers is so powerful, I truly got to experience and celebrate that during the King's visit. In business it's rare that we pause and recognise our success, but this was a real pinch me moment kind of day. This day will be etched in my soul forever.
