Get To Know Me
Hello! I'm Helen, the maker behind the eco-conscious jewellery brand Cube Root. I'm based in the seaside town of South Shields, UK. In 2013 I graduated from Goldsmiths College London with a degree in Fine Art. I spent most of my time making sculptures using porcelain paper clay and made jewellery in my spare time from used bottle tops. After moving back up north and not having the facilities to make ceramic sculptures on a large scale I attended a Silver Clay workshop, I was hooked! This magical material allowed me to combine my love of working with clay and jewellery making, soon after I opened my Etsy shop.
My jewellery is inspired by the simple geometries and textures found within the natural environment. I am passionate about sustainability and I'm always aiming to reduce my impact on the environment. All my packaging is plastic free and I try to create as little waste as possible. One of the unique qualities of working with silver clay is that even the fine silver dust leftover from sanding can be collected and reused. My recent Shape Shift earring collection combines off-cuts of Portuguese cork fabric to explore subtle colour and pattern. The idea came as a reaction to our throw-away society and how simple design could increase the life or use of a single object. The minimal silver studs can be worn on their own for everyday wear or combined with the coloured cork disk for a more statement piece.
I am so grateful that I get the time to be creative and that my jewellery brings joy to other people. When I'm not making you can usually find me on top of a fell with my rescue dog Obi.
